Canberra is small and planned, so a few precincts do most of the work. The city centre around the Canberra Centre has the most foot traffic. Braddon, just north of it, is where independent fashion, cafes and design stores took over old car showrooms. Kingston and Manuka, south of the lake, serve some of the highest-income households in the country, and New Acton sits between the city and the university.
Approvals are simpler than in other capitals. The ACT has no local councils, so the ACT Government, through Access Canberra, handles permits for signage, footpath trading, food and liquor across the whole city. The big moments are Floriade in spring and Enlighten in March, and the city is quiet over the summer holidays, when the public service and the universities wind down.
