Pop up space in Darwin

Running a pop up in Darwin

Darwin works on two seasons. The dry season, from May to October, is when visitors arrive, the markets run and most events happen. The wet season, from November to April, brings heat, storms and monsoon rain, and the city slows down, so a Darwin pop up is usually planned around the dry.

The city is small. The CBD and Smith Street Mall hold the everyday retail, Mitchell Street the bars and backpackers, and the Waterfront and Cullen Bay the dining. The markets do much of the work: Mindil Beach on Thursday and Sunday evenings in the dry season, Parap on Saturdays and Nightcliff on Sundays. The City of Darwin covers most of these precincts.

Spacenow has no Darwin listings yet, so all space is sourced on request. The concierge works with landlords, agents, venues and market operators for your dates and comes back with what is available.

What Darwin is good for

Three briefs that suit Darwin, and where we would start.

Best for Fashion and lifestyle

Dry season retail runs

A short run in the CBD or at Casuarina between May and October catches locals and visitors at the busiest time of year. Light, breathable stock and air-conditioned space make the difference here.

CBD, Casuarina
Best for Festival audiences

Darwin Festival activations

The Darwin Festival runs for three weeks in August, with its hub under the banyan trees. Brand activations and pop up bars usually run through the festival itself, so we approach the organisers well ahead.

CBD
Best for Markets and sampling

Market stalls and sampling

The markets at Mindil Beach, Parap and Nightcliff draw big crowds every week of the dry season. A branded stall or a sampling run there is often the fastest way to reach locals and visitors at once.

Questions about pop ups in Darwin

Do you have pop up spaces in Darwin right now?

Not listed yet. Darwin space is sourced on request: send your dates, the size you need and the area or market, and the concierge will come back with options.

When is the best time for a pop up in Darwin?

The dry season, from May to October. That is when visitors arrive and the markets and festivals run. The wet season is hot and stormy and suits indoor retail only.

Which part of Darwin is best for a pop up?

The CBD and Smith Street Mall for everyday foot traffic, Mitchell Street for evenings, the Waterfront for families and visitors, Casuarina for the northern suburbs, and the markets at Mindil Beach, Parap and Nightcliff for big weekly crowds.

Do I need council approval for a pop up in Darwin?

Sometimes. The City of Darwin covers the CBD and most inner suburbs, and the Darwin Waterfront is run by its own corporation. Signage, footpath displays, food and alcohol can each need approval, and we check what applies before you commit.

Can I run a pop up in a Darwin shopping centre?

Yes. Casuarina Square and the CBD arcades lease short-term space through their casual leasing teams, and air-conditioned centre space is the safest choice in the wet season. Tell us the centre and your dates and we will tell you what is realistic.

Can I serve alcohol at a pop up event in Darwin?

Yes, with a licence. Licensed venues serve under their own licence, and for an unlicensed space you apply to NT Liquor Licensing for a special licence. Processing usually takes about four weeks, so apply six to eight weeks ahead. We tell you which applies before you book.

Does Spacenow charge for finding a space?

No. The concierge sources space for free, and you agree the terms with the host.
