Pop up space in Melbourne

Running a pop up in Melbourne

Melbourne has more listed space on Spacenow than any city but Sydney, and it is the city where a pop up depends most on the street it is on. Each inner suburb has its own crowd. Chapel Street reaches fashion and beauty shoppers. Fitzroy and Collingwood reach a local, design-literate audience. The CBD laneways reach office workers, students and visitors, and High Street in Armadale reaches customers shopping for bridal, interiors and designer labels.

The first half of the year is the busiest. The Australian Open, the Fashion Festival, the Grand Prix and the Comedy Festival bring visitors into the city from January to April, and the Christmas run is booked early. Councils differ too. Melbourne, Yarra, Stonnington and Port Phillip each set their own rules for signage and footpath displays, so the same fit-out can need different approvals a few kilometres apart.

Spacenow ran Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism store in Melbourne over nine hire days. Browse the listed spaces below, or send a brief and the concierge will come back with listed and unlisted options.

Who you reach in Melbourne

Greater Melbourne had about 5.4 million residents in mid-2025 and added more people that year than any other capital. The inner north, from Carlton to Collingwood, skews young and creative, and South Yarra, Toorak and Armadale are among the highest-income suburbs in the country.

Figures checked October 2026.

Where brands pop up in Melbourne

What Melbourne is good for

The three briefs we see most often in Melbourne, and where they work best.

Best for Fashion and beauty

Collection and product launches

A Chapel Street shopfront puts a new collection in front of fashion and beauty shoppers from South Yarra to Windsor. Brands usually open with an invite-only evening, then trade for two to four weeks while the collection is new.

Chapel Street, Armadale
Best for Retailers and wholesalers

Sample and warehouse sales

Warehouses in Collingwood, Fitzroy and Cremorne have the floor space a sample sale needs, with room for racks, change areas and a queue down the street. Stock can come in through a roller door at the back.

Collingwood, Cremorne
Best for Artists and labels

Merch stores and fan events

Tour and album stores need a central site close to a train station, room for a queue and a fit-out that can go in fast. Dua Lipa's Radical Optimism store ran in Melbourne over nine hire days.

Questions about pop ups in Melbourne

How many pop up spaces does Spacenow have in Melbourne?

There are 28 listed spaces in Melbourne right now, mostly in the CBD, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Cremorne, South Yarra, Prahran and Armadale. The concierge can also find space that is not listed, at no cost to you.

Which part of Melbourne is best for a pop up shop?

It depends on your customer. Chapel Street for fashion and beauty, Fitzroy and Collingwood for independent and design-led brands, the CBD for weekday office and visitor traffic, and Armadale for bridal and luxury.

How far ahead should I book a space in Melbourne?

Allow two to three months for the Australian Open in January, the Fashion Festival in February and March, and the Christmas period. Outside those times a listed space can often be ready in a few weeks.

Do I need council approval for a pop up in Melbourne?

Sometimes, and it depends on the council. The CBD and Carlton are in the City of Melbourne, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond and Cremorne are in Yarra, Chapel Street and Armadale are in Stonnington, and South Melbourne is in Port Phillip. Signage, footpath displays, food and alcohol can each need a permit, and we check what applies before you commit.

Can I run a pop up at Chadstone or another Melbourne shopping centre?

Yes. Chadstone, Emporium, Melbourne Central and the other centres lease short-term space through their casual leasing teams, with their own approvals and fit-out rules. Tell us the centre and your dates and we will tell you what is realistic.

Can I serve alcohol at a pop up event in Melbourne?

Yes, with the right licence. Some listed venues already hold one, and for a one-off event in an unlicensed space you apply to Liquor Control Victoria for a temporary limited licence well before the date. We tell you which applies to the space before you book.

Does Spacenow charge for finding a space?

No. Sending a brief and getting a shortlist is free. Enhanced and Premium concierge, for inspections, suppliers and on-site management, are quoted per event. You agree the terms for the space itself with the host.
